Our commitment to the church is the foundation of the Center for Church Music. We believe that music finds its fundamental fulfillment in the church. Therefore, like Martin Luther, the greatest of all the Reformers, we believe that the careful use of music is an essential obligation of the church if it is to protect its flock from the world, the flesh, and the devil. Our commitment mirrors this quote from Martin Luther's introduction to a hymnal that he edited in 1524:
In order that the simple Christian folk in time might learn to understand what the object is of singing in worship, and on the other hand that in [the] future all improprieties cease in the temple [the church], we have published in this booklet several simple and well-rounded songs from holy Scriptures, in order that every Christian may have access to these songs and carry the booklet with him for continuous practice.
Singing is at the center of God's universe. At the heart of the Center for Church Music is the belief that powerful hymn singing can again be the mark of the church--a church that is vibrant and energetic in the singing of its faith.
