Stretching the Voice"Legato Singing"
Last week we briefly looked at this very important vocal quality. In the gospel hymn, "It Is Well With My Soul", we suggested that you sing each phrase on "ah", trying to sing from "note to note" as smoothly as possible.
Today we suggest another song for practice: "Crown Him with Many Crowns." As last time, repeatedly sing each phrase on "ah", making sure that you are not stopping between the notes--or decreasing the volume.
"Singing between the notes" is very important to the vocal process. After you have practiced singing on "ah", switch to the words--again, one phrase at a time. Be very demanding with yourself. (This is very important!)
No matter how long you have been singing, legato singing is always a challenge. But it is one of the most important aspects of great singing!
