"For the Beauty of the Earth" is set to the hymn tune DIX, written by Conrad Kocher. It is also called Treuer Heiland. It was the setting for "Treuer Heiland, wir sind hir" in Hocher’s Stimmen aus dem Reiche Gottes, which was published in Stuttgart in 1838 and also in his Zionsharfe, 1855, a large collection of tunes "from all centuries and all confessions of the Christian Church."
Originally DIX had three phrases in the place of the two final phrases it now has. When it was first set to "As With Gladness Men of Old," in the original edition of Hymns, Ancient and Modern, 1861, William H. Monk gave it its current form.
