Regardless of the season, the cross requires continual reflection. It was a place of such gruesome punishment for Jesus. Yet it’s also a place of glory--where death and sin were conquered forever. With mixed emotions, we look at the cross and recognize its profound impact on our lives.

Since the crucifixion event was one of such magnitude, it's fitting that we take time to reflect on what happened there. This week's hymn focuses our attention on the cross of Christ. It’s a song that celebrates the King, and rejoices in his triumph over death.

But the hymn carries another message as well--one of action and outreach. It calls us to "lift high the cross, the love of Christ proclaim" so that the whole world will hear of Jesus' sacrifice. It also calls us to pray for those who haven't heard the story, asking God to "draw men unto thee ."

During the season of Lent, or today, we must pause to reflect on the events of the cross. But we must also be stirred to action, to move from personal reflection to outreach. As our hymn reminds us, we need to carry the cross high, sharing our faith with those around us.

So in the coming week, maybe you could accept a mission opportunity or say a daily prayer for unbelievers. Or perhaps you could briefly share with your next-door neighbor how Christ has impacted your life. But whatever you choose to do, keep this hymn in mind.
