Michael Newbolt

The lyrics to "Lift High the Cross" were modified in 1916 by Michael Robert Newbolt. Newbolt attended St. John's College at Oxford University, where he received his BA in 1895 and his MA in 1912. He became a pastor in the Church of England during 1900, and went on to serve various parishes, including the Missionary College in Dorchester and All Angels in Brighton. From 1927 to 1946 he was canon of Chester Cathedral.
