HERZLIEBSTER JESU, the hymn tune for "Ah, Holy Jesus" was written by Johann Cruger and first appeared in his Newes vollkomliches Gesangbuch Augsburgischer Confession, which was published in Berlin in 1640. The tune could have been inspired by the setting of Psalm 23 in the Genevan Psalter (c. 1543), "Mon Diew me paist," or by "Geliebter Freund" in Schein's Cantional, 1627. The name comes from the beginning phrase of the German version of the hymn.
