The hymn tune NUN DANKET, to which we sing "Now Thank We All Our God" is attributed to Johann Cruger. It first appeared with this hymn in Cruger’s Praxis Pietatis Melica (Devotional Tunes, Sweet as Honey), 1647. Catherine Winkworth, the translator of the hymn believed, however, that Martin Rinkart wrote the tune along with the words. This is quite possible as Rinkart was himself a noted musician.
Felix Mendelssohn arranged NUN DANKET in six-part harmony in his Lobgesang (Hymn of Praise; Op. 52, 1840). J. S. Bach used the melody in Cantatas 79 and 192. It is one of his Wedding Chorales, in the Choralgesange, and an organ setting is one of his Eighteen Chorales.
