The hymn tune for "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel," VENI EMMANUEL, comes from a fiftteenth-century processional of French Franciscan nuns. It is written in Gregorian mode, with a minor harmony giving it unique appeal. Today, some authorities claim that John Mason Neale copied it himself from the French missal in the National Library of Portugal; others claim that Bishop Jenner copied it on a visit to Lisbon in 1853.
