Adoniram Gordon

Death: February 2, 1895, Boston, Massachusetts

Adoniram Judson Gordon, who composed the hymn tune CARITAS (also known as GORDON), to which we sing "My Jesus, I Love Thee," was born in New Hampton, New Hampshire in 1836. He was educated at Brown University and Newton Theological Seminary. He was ordained in the Baptist church in 1863. He was pastor at churches in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts and at Clarendon Street Baptist Church in Boston, where he served for 26 years.

During his time at Clarendon Street, the congregation was transformed from spiritually dead and worldly to a strong, vibrant and evangelistic church. His works include The Coronation Hymnal, 1894, The Service of Songs for Baptist Churches, 1871 and The Vestry Hymn and Tune Book, 1872.

In addition to editing hymns, he was in charge of The Watchword, a monthly religious periodical. Brown University honored him with a Doctor of Divinity degree in 1878.
