Daniel Roberts

Death: October 31, 1907, Concord, New Hampshire

Daniel Crane Roberts, author of "God of Our Fathers," was born in New York in 1841. He graduated from Kenyon College, Gambier, Ohio in 1857. He served in the 84^th Ohio Volunteers in the Civil War.

In 1865, he was ordained a deacon in the Episcopal church, and was ordained priest the following year. He ministered to Christ Church, Montpelier, Vermont; St. John's Church, Lowell, Massachusetts; St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Brandon, Vermont; and for many years, St. Paul's Church, Concord, New Hampshire. He also was president of the New Hampshire State Historical Society. He received an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from Norwich University in 1885.

A shy man, he never conceived that his hymn would achieve such popularity. His humble demeanor deflected attention from himself. He wrote six years before his death: "I remain a country parson, known only within my own small world."
