Frederick Henry Hedge was a graduate of Harvard University and Divinity School who pastored churches in Massachusetts, Maine, and Rhode Island. He translated "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God" in 1852 while serving as a professor of ecclesiastical history and German literature at Harvard. His translation is the most familiar of at least eighty English versions, and it was first published in a book entitled Gems of German Verse by W. H. Furness, in 1853.
