George Matheson was born in 1842 in Glasgow, Scotland, the son of a Glasgow merchant. He entered Glasgow University when he was fifteen years old. He graduated in 1862 with a Masters of Arts Degree, then continued on to study theology. He was licensed to preach in the Presbyterian Church in 1866. He served churches in Glasgow, Innelan, where he pastored for 18 years, Argyllshire and finally, St. Bernard's Church in Edinburgh where he remained for 13 years.
Matheson had poor vision as a child, by the time he was eighteen he was nearly totally blind. His sisters learned Latin, Greek and Hebrew in order to assist him with his studies. In spite of this, he was an outstanding student. He later went on to contribute much to the literature of theology, publishing twenty-five works. Among them was Sacred Songs, 1890 (third edition 1904). For his outstanding ability as a preacher and author of theological studies, he received an honorary D.D. from Edinburgh University in 1879 and an LL.D. from Aberdeen University in 1902.
