Katharine Lee Bates was the daughter of a clergyman. She attended Wellesley College. She taught English, first at Natick High School, then Dana Hall, and in 1885 she joined the faculty of Wellesley College, becoming a full professor in 1891. She taught there until her retirement in 1925.
Miss Bates wrote "America the Beautiful" while in Colorado in 1892, where she had been asked to teach a summer course at Colorado College, in Colorado Springs.
