William Chatterton Dix was born in Bristol, England. His father had written a biography of poet Thomas Chatterton, and gave William the poet's last name as a middle name. William attended Bristol Grammar School, then went on to manage a marine insurance company in Glasgow.
Dix was a prolific hymn-writer. He wrote at least 40 hymns, along with translating Greek and Abyssinian hymns. He published four volumes of his hymns: Hymns of Love and Joy, 1861; Altar Songs, Verses on the Holy Eucharist, 1867; Vision of all the Saints, 1981; and Seekers of a City, 1878. He also wrote two devotional works and a book of instruction for children.
